Google Ads vs SEO for Contractors
Short answerJobs next month: Google Ads. An asset underneath: SEO.
Google Ads rents leads: you pay for every click and the leads stop when the budget does, but you control the volume. SEO builds a profile and a website that rank on their own; it builds over months, compounds, and keeps working when ad spend stops. If you need more jobs next month, start with Google Ads. If you want an asset underneath, add SEO.

What is the difference?
| Google Ads | SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What you are buying | Clicks from people searching now | Rankings on the map and in the results |
| When the spend stops | The leads stop | The rankings keep working, and fade slowly if nobody tends them |
| Who controls the volume | You, with the budget | Time and your competitors |
| What it costs with Red Orca | $1,000 to build, from $1,500 a month, plus ad spend of at least $2,000 | $2,500 a month for one location, no ad spend |
| Local Services Ads | Included | Included |
| How quickly you can measure it | Within weeks: calls and forms by keyword | Over months: calls and forms from the profile and site |
Which should a home service business start with?
It depends on what you put into Google each month, not on which one sounds better.
| Monthly budget for Google | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under about $2,000 of ad spend | Local Services and your Business Profile | A thin Search budget buys a thin test, and a thin test tells you nothing. Local Services and the profile go further at this number |
| $2,000 and up of ad spend | Google Ads: Local Services and Search | Enough for Search to learn in most counties, and Search is the only channel where you control the volume |
| Search already running well | Add SEO underneath | To stop renting every lead and build something that keeps working |
If you are already running ads and your complaint is that leads cost too much, the answer is fixing how the Search account is built, not switching to a different channel.
That is a structure problem, and SEO does not solve it.
Does the trade change the answer?
Sometimes. Emergency trades, such as plumbing, HVAC repair and storm-damaged roofs, live on calls from people who need someone today, which favours Local Services and Search. Planned projects, such as remodels, siding and finished basements, are researched for weeks, which gives a strong website and profile more time to win the job. Either way the budget decides the first step; the trade decides how much SEO earns once it is in. How the account changes by trade.

Why is SEO more per month than Google Ads management?
Because it is the whole bill. With Google Ads, the $1,500 is the management fee and the ad spend goes on top, and the spend has to be meaningful or the fee is managing nothing. SEO at $2,500 has no ad spend. Compare the totals, not the fees: at $2,000 of ad spend, Google Ads is about $2,000 plus $1,500 a month.
Can I do both?
Yes, and at larger budgets most home service businesses should. The ads bring leads while the SEO builds, the two share the landing page and the tracking, and the same review work helps the Business Profile and Local Services at once. Most contractors start with Google Ads and add SEO once Search is working.
How long does SEO take?
It builds over months and compounds, and I won't give you a date for a ranking because nobody controls one. What you can measure every month is the calls and forms that come from the profile and the site. If you need jobs this month, SEO is the wrong first spend.
